Dr. Kara Peters of NC State University's College of Engineering is researching how to improve the testing of composite materials used in aircrafts. This includes real time monitoring devices that could significantly improve aircraft safety as well as make aircraft maintenance more easy. While metallic frames are easy to inspect for damages, composites offer some challenges to being inspected for damages. Two of Kara Peter's papers are listed here for quick reference : Efficient simulation of Bragg grating sensors for implementation to damage identification in composites Method for determination of crack bridging parameters using long optical fiber Bragg grating sensors
