Abstract |

Promotional video for the Media Arts course at the Univarsity of Plymouth UK.
The University of Plymouth is the largest university in the southwest of England, with over 30,000 students and is the fifth largest UK university based on student population. (Larger universities are Open, London, Manchester, and Manchester Metropolitan respectively.) It has almost 3,000 staff (one of the largest employers in the southwest), and an annual income of around £110 million.
Plymouth is a modern university that is currently undergoing a great deal of development, including several new buildings and restructuring. The University jumped 33 places in The Guardian’s national university league tables published in May 2006, from 73rd place in 2005 to 40th place in 2006 and is settled at 35th place in the recent 2007 publication[2]; the Times table, which unlike the Guardian's takes research performance into account, places it 55th[3]and is billed as one of the top two modern universities in the UK.[4] The Guardian describes the university as "forward thinking", as well as placing Plymouth in the coveted "top 20" for ten subjects including social work (5th), architecture, fine art and drama. Abstract |
|
The University of Maryland, College Park (also known as UM, UMD, or UMCP) is a public university located in the city of College Park, in Prince George's County, Maryland, just outside Washington, D.C., in the United States. Founded in 1856, the University of Maryland is the flagship institution of the state of Maryland, and is considered to be a "Public Ivy" by authors Howard and Matthew Greene of Greene's Guides (2001), defined by the authors as a public institution that "provides an Ivy League collegiate experience at a public school price". The University is most often referred to as the University of Maryland or simply Maryland, even though its formal name remains University of Maryland, College Park.
The University of Maryland's location near Washington, D.C., has created strong research partnerships, especially with government agencies. Many of the faculty members have funding from federal agencies such as the National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Health, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, the Department of Defense, and the National Security Agency. It is a member of the Association of American Universities.
As of fiscal year 2007, the University of Maryland, College Park's operating b... |

Surviving an Earthquake

|
Abstract |
South West England might not be the first place you'd think to look for advice on surviving an earthquake -- but scientists at the University of Bristol, with complementary studies from the neighbouring University of the West of England, are at the cutting edge of research that explores and develops the basic principles used to protect structures during earthquakes
Earthquake damage worldwide is estimated to cost in excess of US$ 70 Billion a year - and this is without factoring in the inevitable loss of human life.
The University of Bristol will soon open its new BLADE laboratory (Bristol Laboratory for Advanced Dynamics Engineering) -- one of the world's largest facilities for simulating earthquakes, allowing testing and evaluation to improve the structure and construction of buildings in areas at risk; avoiding human suffering and the massive economic loss associated with earthquake damage. |

Abstract |
|
Yale University is a private university in New Haven, Connecticut. Founded in 1701 as the Collegiate School, Yale is the third-oldest institution of higher education in the United States and is a member of the Ivy League. Particularly well-known are its undergraduate school, Yale College, and the Yale Law School, each of which has produced a number of U.S. presidents and foreign heads of state. In 1861, the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences became the first U.S. school to award the Ph.D. degree. Also notable is the Yale School of Drama which has produced many prominent Hollywood and Broadway actors, as well as the art, forestry and environment, music, medical, management and architecture schools, each of which is often cited as among the finest in its field. |
